Did you know?
•Approx 2.1% of Earth's surface comprises freshwater swamp forests....these are globally endangered habitats..
• Mangrove forests have a canopy cover of more than 30%
(Remember the Sunderbans?)
• Myristica swamps are rare freshwater swamp forests which have existed for millions of years; found in the low-lying valleys of the Western Ghats, passing through Kerala, Karnataka and Goa. Consists of plant species from the Myristicacae family, which scientists suggest originated in Madagascar in Africa. A small distribution of these swamps are found in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands...
•Myristica swamps contain around 50% amphibians, 26.6% birds, 23% butterflies, more than 20% reptiles, 11% spiders, 8.4% fish and 6.6% mammal species of Kerala...imagine how many different creatures call these swamps home, in the other states as well!
•Rise in sea level due to global warming is a major threat to all kinds of swamps, which is evident in the Sunderbans of West Bengal(India) and Bangladesh as the overall health of the mangroves are declining...caused mostly due to sea level rise, increase in salinity of the water and also faces fungal decay. Lack of important minerals like zinc and manganese is also a major factor. This condition is known as 'top dying'.
Wow. Thanks for providing this valuable information
