Save our feathered friends from EXTINCTION!
Hi readers!
From the title of this page, you should be able to understand what it is about. I had been thinking of ideas about writing a post on already extinct birds all over the world, so, finally I have prepared a list for you people, to see how many innocent feathery souls we have lost.....
1. Passenger Pigeon: Extinct wild pigeon that was endemic to North America. Previously it was quite common. It was known to migrate to South and South-Eastern USA. Last sighting in the 1900s, when the last of the species, Martha, was shot by a boy in Ohio.
2. Carolina Parakeet: Extinct neotropical parrot, native to Eastern, Midwest and plain states of the USA. Were known to eat poisonous 'Cocklebur' seeds. Were the only parrots, native to the USA. There are various theories regarding the extinction of these birds, but the fact that they were hunted for their feathers, is true.
3. Dodo: Extinct flightless bird that was endemic to Mauritius. It was also named as the country's national bird. It is said that its extinction occurred less than 80 years after they were found by Dutch soldiers. These heavy birds had evolved from the group of pigeons and doves, its closest living relative being the Nicobar Pigeon.
4. Himalayan Quail: One of India's most mysterious birds. Known from only two small areas in the Western Himalayas. Even though its conservation status is "Critically Endangered", it was last reported in 1876 and is thus considered to be extinct in the wild.
5. Pink-headed Duck: Another 'lost' bird that used to be found in the Gangetic plains of India. Conservation status is currently "Critically Endangered", but was last reported in 1935. Most probable reason for extinction is habitat destruction, a threat to all the birds in this world.
